Turn Yourself Into CEO Material. Now

In your workplace there are people behind closed doors right now, looking for someone to promote or develop for a larger role. When your name comes up, you want one of them to say, "[Your name] is someone we're watching. We need a half dozen more like [your name]. [Your name] could be a leader in any organization—real CEO material."


An endorsement from the right person at the right time can float you to the top. On the other hand, it takes only one comment such as these to sink you: "She lies." "He doesn't listen." "She blames others." "He demeans his team." A lot of organizations have formal guidelines for promoting people. All organizations have informal methods for evaluating and advancing people. My conversations with top executives continually confirm that the informal trumps the formal nearly every time.

Earlier this week I gave a talk about the state of the crisis at Princeton’s Plasma Physics Lab, and one audience member asked a really good question: if the problem is that interest rates are at the zero lower bound, why should we worry about government borrowing? After all, doesn’t that mean that the government can borrow at a zero rate?

... So what determines confidence? It has a lot to do with the perceived responsibility of the political elite.

It's Not the Crisis; It's How You Respond to It

He probably didn't ask for a problem of quite this magnitude, but like it or not, Akio Toyoda has his crisis. Akio took the reigns with a proclamation that he wanted to change the company, to rid it of (his words) "pervasive hubris and arrogance" or, (my words) the same Big Company disease that he saw grip GM so deeply for so long. For about a year now Akio has been saying that he wants to take the company "back to basics." No less an authority than Taiichi Ohno said you need a crisis to truly embrace TPS. So, Akio has his opportunity. 

As always with things like this (Toyota's crisis, if it doesn't go without saying) it's not the crisis; it's how you respond to it. So far Toyota hasn't responded well. The company will pay a price for that. But, if they problem-solve their way out of the quality and cost issues, the public may forgive them quickly enough.
